Entertainment Weekly put it at the top of their best high school movies list and it's hard to disagree.  

One Saturday detention, five miserable teens, one sadistic teacher, and some of the best character development and insight in the history of the movies. 

Also: tremendous performances, great writing, strong film techniques.  Basically:  a heck of a lot of fun. 

Highest possible recommendation.
